Review: Disney's Live-Action Moana Is a Beautifully Empty Remake

Disney's live-action remake of Moana is exactly the kind of adaptation many fans have grown tired of. Instead of reimagining a a new beloved story or offering a fresh perspective, the film settles for recreating moments from the 2016 animated classic... only with far less personality.

From the opening scenes, it becomes clear that the film is more interested in checking boxes than justifying its own existence. Many of the most memorable shots, musical moments, and story beats are lifted almost directly from the original, but the magic that made them memorable is noticeably absent. the CGI is of course great, but the overall structure of the film and how they handle to show the fantasy of it all becomes grey . What once felt vibrant and full of life now feels surprisingly flat.

The biggest issue is that the remake rarely gives audiences a reason to choose it over the animated version. While the visuals are occasionally impressive, technical polish can only carry a movie so far  as I mentioned before. Without the expressive animation, energetic pacing, and charm that defined the original, many scenes come across as restrained and emotionally distant. As the film progresses, that familiarity becomes repetitive rather than nostalgic. Instead of building excitement, each recreated sequence serves as a reminder that the animated film simply did it better. Rather than enhancing iconic moments, the live-action approach often dulls their impact, making them feel less imaginative and less emotionally engaging.

That's what ultimately makes Moana such a frustrating watch. It isn't aggressively bad it's simply boring.

The film plays things so safely that it never develops an identity of its own. It exists in the shadow of its predecessor without ever stepping out from it.

Disney's best live-action remakes have found ways to expand their source material or reinterpret it for a new audience. Moana doesn't. It feels like a near shot-for-shot recreation that sacrifices the heart, energy, and visual creativity that made the original one of Disney's strongest modern animated films.

If you've never seen the animated Moana, this version may still offer an enjoyable adventure. But for anyone familiar with the original, it's difficult to ignore how much life has been lost in translation.

Verdict: A visually competent but creatively uninspired remake that never justifies its own existence. Instead of bringing Moana to life, it makes one of Disney's most vibrant stories feel surprisingly lifeless.
