Masters of the Universe Review – By the Power of Grayskull, He-Man Returns

For over four decades, Masters of the Universe has stood as one of pop culture's most recognizable fantasy franchises. Now, the legendary battle between good and evil makes its long-awaited return to our screens as Masters of the Universe has now reached digital, bringing a fresh take on the iconic world of Eternia while honoring the characters that have captivated generations of fans.

Based on the beloved Mattel franchise from 1982, the film follows Prince Adam (Nicholas Galitzine), a young hero who was lost from his home world and must wield the legendary Sword of Power. As the fate of Eternia hangs in the balance, Adam must embrace his true identity to stand against the ruthless Skeletor (Jared Leto), whose relentless pursuit of ultimate power threatens his home. Blending epic fantasy, larger-than-life action, and heartfelt themes of courage and responsibility, Masters of the Universe aims to introduce these legendary heroes to a new generation while giving longtime fans plenty to celebrate.

Since its announcement, I had high expectations for this film due to Travis Knight being the one to helm the director's chair, along with an exceptional cast announced. After every single update we had for the film leading to the first trailer, I knew that this film would not let me down.

The first ten minutes of Masters of the Universe gave me literal goosebumps. Right from the opening, we're introduced to the trials that a young Adam endures in Eternia, immediately establishing the emotional foundation of his journey. As his story unfolds, you begin to understand and even relate to the weight he carries, questioning whether he's "man enough" to wield the Power Sword. At its core, the film reminds us that strength isn't defined by what others think of us. Nicholas Galitzine's portrayal of Adam captures someone searching for his place in the world, wrestling with his identity and his own definition of masculinity. That journey hit far closer to home than I expected, and I think it's something truly special for a film like this to explore.

Finding the Hero Within

On the surface, Masters of the Universe is an exciting, action-packed sci-fi adventure filled with massive spectacle and thrilling set pieces. Beneath that, however, is a story with surprising emotional depth. The film explores the idea that true strength comes from embracing who you are, and that authenticity is a power no one else can possess. Chris Butler has always been an exceptional writer, but this may be my personal favorite script of his to date. He has a remarkable ability to craft stories that resonate emotionally, particularly with younger audiences, without ever losing sight of the fun and excitement that make them so entertaining.

Finding the Hero Within

Nicholas Galitzine's performance exceeded every expectation I had going into the film. Rather than simply portraying Adam as a destined hero, he grounds the character with vulnerability and genuine humanity. He takes the source material and gives Adam a relatable emotional core, allowing audiences to connect with his flaws in a way that many action films rarely attempt. I also believe this film offers one of its strongest messages through Adam's journey: masculinity isn't measured by physical strength or appearing invincible. It's about self-respect, integrity, and having the courage to remain true to yourself.

Idris Elba is equally compelling as Duncan, bringing another emotional layer to the film's central themes. While Masters of the Universe initially leans into the familiar trope of a once great hero who has fallen from grace, it quickly evolves into something much more meaningful. Through Duncan's relationship with his daughter, the film becomes a heartfelt story about fatherhood, responsibility, and redemption. Haunted by the belief that he failed to protect Eternia, Duncan carries an even deeper burden: the feeling that he couldn't protect his own daughter. It's a surprisingly emotional storyline that gives the film additional weight and makes Duncan far more than just a mentor figure.

Camila Mendes was one of the film's biggest surprises as Teela, delivering what I genuinely believe is one of the strongest supporting performances in an action film this year. She brings an infectious sense of humor to the role, and her chemistry with Nicholas Galitzine is fantastic. In particular, there's a scene between Teela and Adam that had me on the verge of bursting out laughing, showcasing just how naturally Mendes balances comedy with the film's more emotional moments.

That said, I do wish Teela's character had been given a little more to do narratively. She shares an emotional arc with her father, Duncan, centered around her fear of losing him and her determination to keep him safe. While her intentions are rooted in love, the film subtly suggests that her methods are misguided. Rather than protecting her father, Teela often ends up pushing him away in an effort to shield him, creating an emotional conflict that adds another layer to their relationship.

By the Power of Greyskull

Travis Knight delivers one of the most entertaining action films of the year, blending breathtaking spectacle with genuine emotional depth. Masters of the Universe delivers everything you'd want from a fantasy adventure: incredible action sequences, stunning visuals, hilarious character moments, and one of the most beautiful scores I have heard in recent years. While the film is filled with massive battles and larger-than-life moments, it's the emotional core that makes the experience stand out. Knight understands that beneath all the armor, powers, and mythology, this is ultimately a story about finding yourself and discovering what truly makes someone a hero.

What makes Masters of the Universe so special is how it balances its epic fantasy world with themes that feel surprisingly personal. This isn't just a story about Adam becoming the hero Eternia needs; it's about someone learning to believe in himself, embrace who he is, and understand that strength isn't defined by how others view you. The performances from Nicholas Galitzine, Idris Elba, and Camila Mendes help bring those themes to life, creating characters who feel grounded despite being surrounded by magic, monsters, and incredible action. Combined with Chris Butler's heartfelt writing and Knight's direction, the film becomes much more than a simple franchise adaptation.

Masters of the Universe is a celebration of what makes these stories timeless. It honors the legacy of the franchise while bringing something fresh, emotional, and meaningful for a new generation. From its unforgettable score to its incredible action and powerful message about identity and self-worth, Travis Knight has crafted an adventure that feels both nostalgic and completely new. Whether you're a lifelong fan of He-Man or experiencing Eternia for the first time, this film proves that the greatest power a hero can have isn't just what's in their hands, it's the courage to be themselves.
